Kumahei Cafe: Plum-Vinegar Karaage and Nine Umeboshi in Minabe

Overview

Kumahei Cafe occupies one corner of the Minabe shop of Kumahei no Ume, a Kishu nanko-ume specialist founded in 1941, three minutes by car from the Minabe interchange. The shop moved to its present address in Kisato in August 2025 and opened the cafe that October, so the dining room and the retail shelves now share a floor. Minabe is where the nanko-ume was selected and named before its registration in 1965; with neighbouring Tanabe it grows more than half of Japan's ume, in terraced groves recognised as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System in 2015.

The dish to order is the plum-vinegar karaage set, 1,200 yen: chicken worked with umezu, the sharp salty liquor drawn off the pickling barrels. Every set meal arrives with nine umeboshi to taste from the shop's own range, so you settle on a favourite at the table and pick that jar up on the way out. The kitchen also runs a daily set, chicken tempura, shirasu rice, plum curry and udon, and opens at nine with a morning toast set. Drinks run to coffee, Kawazoe black tea and ume cordials; the plum pound cake is baked with Misakido, a long-standing Minabe confectioner, using fruit from the house umeshu.

The cafe serves 9:00–16:00 (last orders 15:30), lunch 11:30–14:30; the shop opens an hour earlier and closes at 17:00, and both rest on Tuesdays and over the New Year. Parking is free and takes coaches, the counter has sockets and free Wi-Fi, and JR Minabe station is about ten minutes away by taxi. On the shelves, the shiso-pickled umeboshi carries the prefecture's Premier Wakayama mark, and the house Kumahei umeshu took top gold at the IWSC and the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2026.
